Chakras

Chakras or our body’s energy centres are nothing new and have been catalogued and used by many ancient cultures around the world.  The mere fact that they were worked on by the wisest cultures on various continents before knowledge was passed on and shared must surely prove that there is something in it! Chakras are the amazing metaphysical power houses of the human body. You can learn tolocate them, heal them and use them for charging your light, enabling psychic power, better health and more constant levels of happiness.  They are the key to our balance, well-being and energetic powers.
Root Chakra - RED

Location:  Base of spine and in the region of the pubic bone, facing downward toward the feet.

Governs:  Adrenal gland, spinal column, kidneys, legs, feet, rectum, immune system, teeth and bones, genitals and reproductive organs.
Influences:  Sexuality, mental stability, sensuality and sense of security.

Imbalances (Negative characteristics): Lower back pain, varicose veins, rectal tumours, depression, immunity related disorders, self-esteem issues and general grounding and security.  Being generally unfit with self-destructive thoughts, unable to follow through on accomplishing goals or even putting thoughts into action are signs that this chakra is out of balance.
The base or root chakra helps to keep us connected to the earth.  It is the grounding force of our powerhouse. The root chakra acts as the foundation of our physical vitality, emotional and mental health. Your sense of belonging and connection to all life, your endurance and mental perseverance all stem from this energy centre.  People who find this chakra is out of synch may find that they live too much in their heads, constantly thinking and analysing.  They may take drugs to escape from a reality they find to tiring or boring or even work too much on their spiritual lives without connecting enough to the present.  This is a very important chakra.  It gives you your passion for life, it is also responsible for (with the help of your brow chakra) gathering the energetic blessings from Mother Earth until there is enough to create a force – it is like a springboard or electromagnetic coil that catapults our creative/healing energies upwards and through the blessings of the rest of our chakras.
Walking barefoot on the earth, practicing Yoga, taking daily  physical exercise, digging in the garden, soaking in a salt bath, dancing to music that incorporates deep drum or base rhythms, cooking and cleaning,  all help to stimulate this chakra.  Letting your energy connect to Mother Earth on a regular basis is as important to us as it is to her.

The colour red energizes and stimulates the base chakra to boost its power. Wearing red in the form of clothing or red gemstones such as Red Jasper, Ruby and Garnet help to give it an energy boost or bring back harmony.

Including red foods and drinks in your diet such as beetroot, radishes, red onions, kidney beans and spices like chilli, cayenne and paprika have a grounding effect too.

Aromatherapy oils such as sandalwood, ylang ylang and juniper also help to trigger and heal this energy centre.

Sacral Chakra ORANGE
Location: Sacrum, below the navel near the lower abdomen.

Governs: Gonad gland, sexual organs, stomach, upper intestines, liver, gallbladder, kidney, pancreas, adrenal glands, spleen and middle spine.

Influences:   Enthusiasm, happy joyfulness, creativity and the balanced flow of energy in and out of your life.

Imbalances (Negative characteristics): Anger, menace, hatred, apathy, blame, guilt, greed, power, control, morality, ob/gynae problems, pelvic pain, libido and urinary problems.  If this chakra is out of balance we can find ourselves disconnected from reality and with emotions that jump all over the place.

This second chakra is the centre of our personal power, creativity, sexuality and finances. It’s the chakra that helps to attune our senses.  The sacral chakra helps to enhance and tune the energy from our base chakra, enabling us to live consciously in the present, connecting us to our feelings and our inner child. Closely associated with balancing the acts of giving and receiving, the sacral chakra is tied into the more physical feelings of love, passion, enthusiasm, happiness and joy and being in tune with your inner-child. In the flow of your healing energy the stronger this chakra is the better.  It helps to gently hold and guide the powerful and fast energy generated in a healthy base chakra directing it towards the solar plexus ready for integration to the higher chakras

Embracing sensations helps this chakra, varied tastes in your food, emotional movies, deep tissue massage, stimulating water – hot aromatic baths or water aerobics, belly dancing and listening to flowing music are some of the ways of encouraging this chakra’s energy.

Food that are orange in colour and that nourish the creative and sexual centre like Oranges, melons, mango, cinnamon, caraway seeds, passion fruit and honey are ideal to energize the chakra.

Use aromatherapy oils such as Melissa, Orange, Mandarin and Tangerine. Dressing in the colour orange and wearing or carrying copper or orange gemstones like coral or carnelian will boost this chakra’s power.
The Solar Plexus Chakra – YELLOW
Location: Above the navel, stomach area
Governs: Pancreas, upper abdomen, liver, gallbladder, middle spine, spleen, kidney, adrenals, small intestines, stomach
Influences:  mental awareness, the sacral chakra connects you to your mind power. It governs your ability to learn and comprehend enabling optimism and confidence, good digestion, will power, growth, self-control and good humour.

Imbalances (Negative characteristics): Poor focus and memory, clouded thoughts, lack of concentration, difficulty making decisions or delegating to others, fear of being alone, low self-esteem, fear of rejection, oversensitivity to criticism, nervousness, digestive problems, ulcers, diabetes, hypoglycaemia, constipation.

Yellow is the colour of optimism.  Think of what makes you happy and do it.  It IS within you to do something with your life that follows your soul path and makes you happy.  Be optimistic, dream of ways to follow the path that resonates best for you and all concerned.  Sunshine is essential for this chakra and it is the one that lights the sunshine within us.  It is like the shine of the sun, the moon and the stars all in one and its energy is vital to us.  It tempers the fiery energies generated in the base and sacral chakras, without it our energy is too hot for the heart causing the heart chakra to misfire and lose hope but with it the beautiful energies of the lower chakras flow from and to Mother Earth as they should and are lifted and bounce joyfully both into and out of the heart chakra.

In the western world it is common for the sacral chakra of many to start becoming blocked as teenagers, as they go through the pain of being pressured by parents and a society to choose a life path.  At a time when most of their natural instincts have been neglected by the rigidity of school and society and we rush them to fit in as young ‘achieving’ adults to adapt to moulds that they don’t intuitively or even naturally fit into.

Reading informative books, detoxification programmes, colonic cleansing, keeping your mind active with puzzles and developing it by reading intelligently (rather than just for simple escapism) and using exercises to improve your memory will all help this chakra.  Stimulating music that involves reed instruments, horns or chimes also help to attune it.

Yellow brings out the best in this chakra. Grains like sunflower seeds, rice and flax seed dairy products like milk, cheese and yogurt as well as spices like ginger, turmeric, cumin, fennel and chamomile stimulate this chakra.

Gold and gemstones like Citrine, Amber and Topaz emit the healing vibrations this chakra needs when out of balance.

Yellow clothing helps stimulate the third chakra as do aromatherapy oils such as Rosemary, Lemon, Grapefruit and Bergamot.

The Heart Chakra – GREEN
Location: Centre of chest

Governs: Thymus, heart, circulatory system, blood, lungs, diaphragm, thymus, breasts, oesophagus, shoulders, arms and hands.

Influences: love and unconditional giving, love for the self and others, self-acceptance, passion, devotion, forgiveness, compassion.

Imbalances (Negative characteristics):  lack of self-love, fear of being abandoned or rejected, lack of confidence or hope, despair, hate, envy, fear, jealousy and passivity (inability to say no) Heart and breathing disorders, breast cancer, asthma, lung cancer, pneumonia, shoulder problems all point to imbalance in the heart chakra.

The heart chakra is the power house of the human energy system and the centre of love and healing. It is the turbo boost for your spiritual energies and if they are charged properly in the lower chakras this chakra is where the magic begins.

Again in the West it is often during the teenage years that the heart chakra can become blocked or closed as teens go through the pain of first loves and hormonal changes.  Quite often this is the last place that our naturally spirited energies will fire off before conforming.  This and the fact that the part of the brain that houses compassion is still only partly formed at this stage can often make teenagers irrational and difficult causing rejection from parents and peers and further closure of this important chakra.  Teenagers just need more compassion and love from the society around them to be true to themselves.  With enough love they grow a strong faith in themselves and can often come up with amazing ideas for the greater good.  They can actually often create quicker than us adults as they are habitually fearless.

The heart chakra is its own catalyst and, with a little work, it is also the one that can bring about any emotional healing that may be required within itself. Practice gratitude.  True gratitude comes from the heart chakra, but it also warms the throat chakra and opens a pillar of light for their energy to flow through enabling a quickening of the energies in all the chakras. The heart chakra is our link between body and spirit.  Between us, God and the Angels.  It is the spring board the energies gathered in the previous chakras need to propel themselves up and through to be blessed.  Following the soul’s desire to manifest goodness and love, with faith in ourselves, is the only key that will fully open its treasure chest.

Nice long walks in nature help to heal/feed this chakra. Taking care of and growing plants, gardening, going on picnics, spending time with family and friends, watching romantic movies or reading things that warm your heart, candlelight dinners with a loved one and listening to music that includes the sounds of nature all help to charge the energy of the heart chakra.

Associated with the colours green or pink, eating green foods and drinks like spinach, broccoli, celery, squash and green tea help to keep the heart chakra in balance. Herbs such as basil, thyme, parsley and cilantro also waken the powers of this chakra.

Essential oils of Rose, Eucalyptus, Pine, Tea Tree, Spearmint and Cedarwood are its stimulants. Rose Quartz, Emerald, Jade and Peridot are the stones associated with positive effects on the Heart Chakra.

Alchemy of Sound has a good solfeggio video at:
Even if you may find it annoying to listen to at first, give it a chance, love flushes out all that is unlike itself, just let it play all the way through and focus on your heart chakra

“I forgive all those that have hurt me,
and wish for them to be filled with light
so they are able to connect to their higher selves
I forgive anything that may be blocking me in this lifetime,
please enable my heart to be truly open and loving ”
Try listening to it before doing anything that is a chore
and witness for yourself how much easier things are
when we vibrate at the frequency of Love
The Throat Chakra – BLUE

Location: Throat region, parallel to the thyroid gland

Governs: Thyroid, throat, trachea, neck vertebrae, mouth, teeth, gums, oesophagus, parathyroid and hypothalamus.

Influences:   Being able to express yourself and what you believe in, communication, individuality, sense of security, trusting in others, loyalty, organization and planning.

Imbalances (Negative characteristics):  shy and unable to express or talking too much/rambling, distrust, feeling the need of possessions to validate, thyroid imbalances, swollen glands, fevers, flu, sore throat, mouth ulcers, scoliosis, laryngitis, voice problems, gum or tooth problems, addiction, criticism, faith, decision making.
The Blue throat chakra is the centre of our communication and will.  Its job is to receive and assimilate information.  It is through balance in this chakra that we are able to voice our inner truths and opinions, and it is through vocalising our inner truths and opinions that we are able to fine tune and find ourselves.  The essence of this chakra is faith.  Faith in our fears blocks the energy that flows through it and faith in the divine energy both in and around us allows it to flow.  We are not square pegs, we are all individuals and being honest about all of our truths can help ourselves and others to grow.  Being true to our higher inner truths is important, regardless of what others think of them.

Blue is the colour of faith, having enough faith in ourselves to be ourselves is a key.  As the colour blue boosts this chakra, water is one of the most natural ways to energize it. Drink plenty of pure water, lay in a peaceful bath using the corresponding essential oils with a blue candle, listen to music that contains flowing water or buy a water feature to add balance to your room. Singing, chanting, journaling, meaningful conversations with people you find it easy to talk to are all ways of expanding the energy of your throat chakra.  It is important that the throat chakra be open, as this is where the energies gathered in our minds and the previous chakras, gets granted the breath of life, the wind that carries us into the world, and our energies through the next two chakras and out to the universe.

As blue is not a natural colour in food, tangy and tart fruits like limes, lemons and grapefruit, lemon grass, salt, fruit juices and herbal teas stimulate this chakra.

Wearing the colour blue and stones such as Sapphire and Blue Agate as well as oils such as Geranium, Chamomile, Peppermint, Mint and Cypress are associated with energizing this chakra.
The Brow Chakra – INDIGO
Location: Forehead, in between the eyes – also known as 3rd eye chakra and home of the pineal gland or the soul.

Governs: Pituitary gland, brain, neurological system, eyes, ears, nose, pineal glands

Influences: Spiritual awakening, balance, harmony, co-ordination, a sense of trust in oneself, clarity on an intuitive level, psychic and intuitive abilities

Imbalances (Negative characteristics):  overly proud or unable to accept credit because of lack of genuine self-pride, arrogance, suspicion, hanging on to negative thoughts, fears and anxieties, depression and loneliness, brain tumours, strokes, blindness, deafness, seizures, learning disabilities, sleep disorders, discipline, judgment, concept of reality, confusion and emotional intelligence
The third-eye chakra is the key to our wisdom, learning and putting things in perspective. Your universal consciousness and intuitive intelligence arises from the activity and connection of this chakra.  It is key to being able to separate fantasy and reality and is also a huge key when creating visualisations and using our abilities to manifest.  The Brow chakra or third eye involves mental abilities of intellect and reasoning combined with psychological skills at evaluating our beliefs and attitudes.  Meditation and chanting OM are both powerful tools for this chakra and are a key to help in developing intuition and psychic abilities. Star gazing and eye rolls/exercises also help to reconnect our third eye area.

A deep indigo colour boosts this chakra. Present in food like blueberries, blackberries, dark grapes, red wine, grape juice, lavender and poppy seed and should be consumed to stimulate this chakra.

Aromatherapy oils such as Patchouli, Frankincense and Myrrh and Indigo stones like Amethyst, Tourmaline and Tanzanite are associated with the Third eye chakra. Dressing in Indigo enlivens this chakra too.

The Crown Chakra – VIOLET
Location: Top of head. Connects to the central nervous system via the hypothalamus and the thalamus.

Governs: Pineal, top centre of the head, midline above the ears, central nervous system

Influences: Physically connects us to the energetic matrix, God, our higher selves, higher wisdoms, a calm state of being, universal consciousness and integration of the whole.

Imbalances (Negative characteristics): Epilepsy, chronic exhaustion not associated with physical ailments, mystical depression, right/left brain disorders and coordination problems, photo-sensitivity, mental illness, senility, loss of humanitarianism, values, ethics and lack of purpose.

The Crown Chakra is our connection to our spiritual nature and our capacity to allow spirituality to become an integral part of our physical lives. It is this chakra that links us to the cosmos and brings about spiritual awakening. It is the energy of trust, knowing and enlightenment. It is through this very important energy centre that we connect to a higher life force and it is dispersed to the other 6 chakras below it.  It plays an integral part in linking the energy generated within our chakras to God, ourselves and the earth.  To be fully integrated and balanced beings we need our energies to connect like roots into mother earth with gratitude and out to the heavens with faith (in ourselves if atheist, not having connected or accessed any of the higher energies yet  doesn’t deny us connection to it).  Quiet contemplation, meditation, yoga, focus on one’s dreams and writing down our visions and inventions helps to link us to this chakra.

Violet is the colour most associated with the Crown chakra and then white. Try imagining you are standing under a shower of white or violet light – maybe next time you’re in the shower if your visualisation isn’t strong yet. (I’m more of a feeling person myself and had trouble with visualising for many years)

Violet stones of Quartz Crystal or Diamond as well as aroma oils like Lavender, Jasmine and Magnolia stimulate the crown chakra. Wearing shades of violet and incenses of sage, myrrh, frankincense, and juniper help open and clearing this Spiritual Communication Centre.

In many of us the top three chakras
(Crown, Brow, and Throat)
Become blocked by the time they are three years old
as a reaction to the disbelief of their parents and society
in their inner knowing and understanding of nature spirits,
spirit friends, and past lives.

It is through listening to our bodies and learning about our chakras
that we can charge and heal our energy
